Another hour of shifting in hard, creaking wooden seats, straining to hear the speaker on stage through the constant hum of the microphone. Most students have been through this several times, but that is in the past. Workers and volunteers together are changing the look and sound of Grimsley’s Chance/ Cousins Audito rium. As of yet, seat covers, a new sound system and more have been added to the auditorium. Do nations from vari ous groups have paid for all of this. Wrangler Corpora tion donated $15,000 worth of cloth to cover the seats. The Grimsley pile of donations, along with many others. Parent volunteers have made a tremendous effort. They have worked at the Casino Night, have spent a weekend spraying fireproofing on seat covers and much more. Though much has already been done, there is still more to come. Now that the sound system is installed, lighting is the next focus. Alumni Organization donated $10,000 and last year’s Casino Night raised around $30,000, all of which will go toward the reno vations. Proceeds from the William Mangum paintings sold last year, and proceeds from the sale of greeting cards also went into the ■Mr. Zaruba and cast members of “The Music .Man” take time to study the script renovated auditorium. The auditorium has a new sound system and seat cover.s. In the future, Whirlies will enjoy an atmo sphere developed by house and stage light ing, full stage rigging and acoustical ceiling structures. As they are, the acoustics in the auditorium are very poor. “We knew that one of our first Jobs was to fix the acoustics; in the newly Futures Center open for student researeh By Greg Dolan Reporter The Futures Center is undergoing changes this year, but it can still help students get college and career information. “The Futures Center allows students to do research so that they may be able to better de cide what they will do after high school,” says Karen Dixon, a parent volunteer and the direc tor of the Futures Center. Located on the first floor of the main building with its plush carpet ing, its dark blue walls, and its comfortable fur niture, the Futures Center provides the students with a perfectly satisfactory work area that stu dents like more than the Guidance Office. The Futures Center has five computers, count less pamphlets and brochures, a knowledgeable staff, and a hundred college videos, to equip inquiring students with the tools to research col leges, careers, and career training. In spite of a successful first year, the Futures Center is forced to shorten its hours due to a lack of parent volunteers. This year the Fu tures Center is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:35 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., with no closings during the day, and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “The Wednesday schedule will hopefully allow students at Weaver and students with scheduling problems to come before school, after school, or during both lunches,” says Mrs. Dixon. they are Just awful,” said Bob Thurston, who is a member of the re.iovation board, “ Even when you are sitting close to tb.e stage it is often difficult to hear.” This is a problem for prefonning groups. “ The old sound system worked well .When all of the seats are filled, you get a decent sound. But it’s when you have eiuDtv seats the problem occurs,” said Mr. Zaruba, Drama teacher. The new sound system, which consists of six hung speakers, has eliminated the old sound problems. “The acoustics are now much bet ter, and that will make music sound clearer,” said Kara Sturey, a sopho more. All renova tions are ex pected to be completed by the year 1999, for the 100th graduating class of Grimsley. As Mr.Thurston said, “It is our goal to have everything completed then. We are not putting in high-tech equipment, but it will make the auditorium more comfortable and much easier to work with, and it is past time for it to be done.”
